Maple Homage
The Vermont Sugar Maple is a staple of Vermont agriculture. In the fall, “leaf peepers” travel from around the world to see these trees change color from bright yellow to deep red. This design is in the shape of a Lancet window taken from gothic architecture, and symbolizes the worship and idolization of the beloved sugar maple tree which produces some of the best maple syrup in the world. I’ve included motifs depicting the lifecycle of the tree with “helicopters” holding the seed of the plant, the small flowers it produces in spring that surround an old maple syrup tap, a giant, glass maple syrup jug, a sap bucket, and a black bear, red squirrel and hermit thrush, the Vermont state bird. These elements combined with oversized colorful leaves create a sense of place and reverence.
